Our current computer is only a 2Gz. dualcore AMD Sempron,2 GB RAM and quite a lot of free additional diskspace.Nothing to write home about and allready 2 years old.
But that thing is working for everthing we are doing with it and a lot faster compared to the Pentium 1.8 we used before.
We aren't interested in a notebook as long as we are using the computer only at home.We repaired that thing allready twice by ourself, what was a matter of minutes. We couldn't do that with a notebook that easy. This is one of a few reasons for us to take a PC over a notebook.Another one is that you just get more value with a Pc for the same money.
Now they are all decreasing in the prices, harddisks are getting cheaper by the week exept the best ones.
Also the workstations are coming down.
Computers for softwaredevelopers, architects with for instance 192GB RAM and 30 core processors are in price regions now, more people can afford. They are impressive, this computers, but i don't know,if a normal user like myself would even feel a big difference.
The Intel Xeon equipped ones are down to 2500$ now.But additional hard disks(15.000rpm)are between 500-600$ per Terrabite and so on.The hi-end graphiccards aren't that cheap too and some of this computer are containing up to eight of them.
This workstations are looking pretty much like a normal PC,just higher through all the inbuilded cardslots.
The OS and often used programms are normally installed on a SSD-not a normal harddisk anymore.
Here the best Dell workstation:

Cars or factories get designed with this computers, quite impressive.Sometimes they are used in "farms" of dotzends of them, connected together.
We guess,we'll stick for a while longer to our "normal computer",or maybe upgrade to a 3.5 GB 4core,we'll see.The difference here is that it's not as easy as in a western country to get the most recent equipment. We would have to drive up to Phnom Penh if we want to replace our current PC and check out the offerings there.
